On November 19, 2025, the International Research Center for Neurointelligence (WPI-IRCN) at the University of Tokyo co-hosted a special hybrid commemorative event celebrating Professor Dr. Shun-ichi Amari’s conferment of an Honorary Doctorate from Technische Universität Berlin.

Professor Amari, a 2025 Kyoto Prize Laureate, Specially Appointed Professor at Teikyo University, Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo, and Honorary Science Advisor at RIKEN, is internationally recognized as a founder of mathematical neuroscience and the originator of information geometry. His work has profoundly influenced neuroscience, statistics, and machine learning. The event brought together collaborators and colleagues from Japan and Germany to honor his remarkable scientific legacy.

Tribute Address

Dr. Klaus-Robert Müller (Technische Universität Berlin) opened the program with a warm tribute, sharing his personal experiences as a visiting researcher and reflecting on Professor Amari’s profound influence on machine learning and theoretical neuroscience, as well as his long-standing collaboration with TU Berlin researchers.

Commemorative Talk

Professor Amari delivered an inspiring commemorative talk reviewing key developments in information geometry and mathematical theories of neural computation, sharing insights from decades of foundational research. He also spoke on topics such as our future relationship with artificial intelligence and offered reflections drawn from his lifelong scientific journey.

Congratulatory Address & Bouquet Presentation

Following the lecture, Dr. Kazuyuki Aihara (Executive Director of WPI-IRCN, The University of Tokyo) offered congratulatory remarks, highlighting Professor Amari’s pioneering role in establishing the mathematical foundations of nonlinear science and neurointelligence.
To conclude the event, Dr. Mayumi Kimura (Administrative Director of WPI-IRCN, The University of Tokyo) offered additional congratulatory words and presented a bouquet, bringing the celebration to a warm and pleasant close.
