On July 18, 2025, WPI-IRCN at the University of Tokyo hosted four university students as part of an official tour organized by the European Commission and the Delegation of the EU. The students are winners of the 2024 European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS).

We conducted a tour to the following two laboratories to share with them our state-of-the-art research equipment and environment available at WPI-IRCN:

In the laboratory of PI Yasushi Okada, Dr. Masafumi Kuroda (Project Assistant Professor) and Dr. Daisuke Taniguchi (Postdoctoral Fellow) showed their expertise on high-speed and high-resolution 3D imaging by using their self-made light-sheet microscope. The visitors were impressed by clearly visualized neuronal networks in the whole mouse brain.
In the Imaging Core Facility (presented by Dr. Satoru Kondo, Core Manager, Project Associate Professor), the visitors learned about research on cortical visual information processing. Using two-photon microscopy, optogenetics, and anatomical tracing in mouse models, the lab investigates how individual neurons, and neuronal circuits process sensory input, with the goal of elucidating fundamental computational principles that may also inspire future AI development.
