On Thursday, January 9, 2025, IRCN hosted an event titled “Envisioning a Society Where the Strengths of Neurodiversity are Embraced ~ Compassion, Inclusion and What It Truly Means to Value Diversity ~.” Many participants gathered to engage in dialogue and learning as well as reflecting about the importance of understanding and embracing neurodiversity in society.

Film Screening: “My Brother is a Hero” - Dialogue with the Author and the Researcher

The event featured the screening of the film "My Brother is a Hero", based on the book written by Mr. Giacomo Mazzariol, who himself also served as the inspiration for the film's protagonist. Mr. Mazzariol, who traveled from Italy for the event, shared his personal experiences and insights with the audience.
Following the screening, Mr. Mazzariol participated in a profound panel dialogue with Dr. Kenryu Nakamura, Senior Research Fellow at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Tokyo. Their discussion explored how society can integrate the concept of "embrace" and build a culture that respects and values the unique characteristics of neurodiverse individuals. This exchange, enriched by contributions of the audience, underscored the importance of understanding neurodiversity and fostering a mindset of inclusion.

IRCN Research Showcase and ASD Simulator Experience

At the IRCN booth, participants had the opportunity to explore a special corner hosted by the Nagai Lab featuring an ASD (autism spectrum disorder) simulator. This interactive experience allowed participants to step into the world of sensory hypersensitivity and provide insight into the challenges faced by individuals affected by ASD.
Many participants shared that the simulator helped them gain a deeper understanding of the difficulties associated with sensory processing, making it a powerful and an eye-opening experience. The booth provided a valuable opportunity for participants to develop new perspectives and foster greater empathy for neurodiverse individuals.

Voices from Participants

Many participants expressed deep admiration for Mr. Mazzariol's presentation, with many sharing their emotional reactions. Comments such as "I was deeply moved to speak directly with Mr. Mazzariol" and "Watching the film allowed me to reflect on my own family" highlighted the personal impact of the experience. In addition, several participants resonated with the themes of sibling and family love depicted in the film, noting the strong emotional impact it had on them.
In addition, participants were inspired by Dr. Nakamura's extraordinary work, with some sharing their hope for a future where technology complements disabilities and transitions naturally to embrace individuality. "It made me reflect on how I can contribute to society in the future," was a sentiment echoed by many, emphasizing the thoughtful and forward-looking nature of the event.

Future Endeavors

This event provided a valuable platform to deepen understanding of neurodiversity and explore ways to celebrate individuality within a shared community. Moving forward, IRCN remains committed to addressing societal challenges through the lens of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion).

We sincerely thank everyone who joined us in this enriching event.
