{"id":10826,"date":"2019-07-22T19:14:24","date_gmt":"2019-07-22T10:14:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ircn.jp\/?p=10826"},"modified":"2019-08-05T09:45:18","modified_gmt":"2019-08-05T00:45:18","slug":"20190720_publicevent2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ircn.jp\/en\/outreach_report\/20190720_publicevent2","title":{"rendered":"July 20, 2019:  Talk Session, \u201cHow Do Children Learn Language? -Q&#038;A Session on Infant Language Acquisition- \u201d Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On July 20, 2019, IRCN held the event, \u201cHow Do Children Learn Language? -Q&A Session on Infant Language Acquisition- \u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/ircn.jp\/en\/mission\/people\/sho_tsuji\">Sho Tsuji<\/a>, Principal Investigator of IRCN at RYOZAN PARK PRESCHOOL, a bilingual nursery in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, Dr. Tsuji explained about \u201cEarly Age Language Acquisition\u201d.  Babies are able to identify the characteristics of their mother tongue just after birth and they have ability to adapt themselves and choose what is important in their environment to learn their native language effectively. <\/p>\n<p>Second part of the lecture was about \u201c6 Principles \u2013 How to Support Language Acquisition.\u201d  The six principles are: \u201cFrequency (Number of Words Heard)\u201d, \u201cBaby\u2019s Interest (Joint Attention)\u201d, \u201cContingency (Reaction from Parents)\u201d, \u201cMeaningfulness (Increasing Coherence)\u201d, \u201cDiversity\u201d and \u201cReciprocity (Different Levels of Language).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In this lecture, Dr. Tsuji told that it is important to \u201ctalk a lot\u201d to babies because the number of words the babies know is correlated with the number of words heard (\u201cFrequency\u201d), to have joint attention, for instance looking in the same direction as babies (\u201cInterest\u201d), and to react to babies\u2019 actions at the right time (\u201cContingency\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>The third part of the lecture was about \u201cBilingualism.\u201d The 40 participants, mostly parents, were very much interested in whether bilingualism makes their babies\/children smarter.
